SEAI grant for home heating

Better Energy Homes is a Government scheme which gives fixed cash grants for insulation and heating system upgrades, helping to make your home more comfortable and cheaper to run. It is available to all owners of homes built before 2006.

In March 2015 higher grant values and bonus payments were introduced and the scheme is now available for previous applicants to get additional works completed.

Who can avail of the scheme?

It is a National scheme and therefore all homeowners of dwellings built before 2006 may apply. Landlords and owners of multiple properties may also apply, however they must submit a separate application form for each property.

How to apply?

Grant approval must be in place before any works commence. For a speedy application and immediate approval, apply online at www.seai.ie/betterenergyhomes

You will need your:

  • Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) which you will find on your electricity bill
  • Bank details
  • E-mail address
  • Chosen registered contractor from the SEAI Registered Contractor List

Alternatively you may apply using our postal application form which is available by: calling 1850 927 000 or online at www.seai.ie/betterenergyhomes

What grants are available?

Grants are fixed for each type of measure as indicated in the table below. In the instance where the cost of the work (vat inclusive) is less than the fixed grant amount, the actual cost will be reimbursed:

Choosing a Contractor

Before choosing a contractor from the SEAI registered list:

  • Talk to friends, family, or neighbours who may have done works recently
  • Shop around, get multiple quotes and compare the offers
  • Check references, talk to previous customers, visit their homes if you can
  • Formalise the relationship by having a contract which details the works, prices, time, payment terms and warranties
